The "Healthy Seas Fashion Project" is a unique clothing exhibition of garments created using yarn reclaimed from the sea. Organized by MEDASSET (Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles), the exhibition will be hosted by CRETAquarium nearby Heraklion.
The public will be able to view the exhibition which will run through until the end of September and is part of the initiative, "Healthy Seas: A Journey from Waste to Wear".
The aim of the initiative is to remove as many fishing nets from the ocean as possible, many of which have been entangled in wrecks or rocks on the ocean floor. Some even wash up on the shores and are a threat to seabirds. These nets can be deadly to marine life, trapping turtles, dolphins, seals and other marine creatures.
Once these nets are removed, they can be processed into yarn. ECONYL® is the product of this initiative and is a high-quality yarn. It can be used in the manufacturing of not only clothing but also carpets and other products.
The initiative also serves to promote a new model of sustainable development. Based on the concept of a circular economy. This a concept which focuses on using existing resources to reduce their waste, and is being run in five European countries, including Greece.
Visitors have the opportunity to take a look at 2,000 different marine creatures and then enjoy the fashion exhibition afterward in a demonstration of environmental awareness and fashion. Behind-the-scenes videos are also available which tell the story of how the project came together and shows further footage revealing just how dangerous the nets are to marine life.
The General Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Maria Vlazaki commented on the exhibition by mentioning how original the concept is, and how it shows how interconnected culture and the environment are. She also spoke of how valuable it is to take environmental action by making use of recycled materials to create something new.
The exhibition provides the public with valuable insight into the preservation of our marine life and the exhibition is an artistic display of just how innovative our designers are.
