The air pollution is an increasing problem at the moment in Greece. It has been getting worse over the past years especially. Some experts connect this increasing environmental issue with the recent economic crisis in Greece. According to a recent study, the air pollution in Greece has gotten worse ever since the economic crisis started to be felt by the Greeks.
"Levels of dangerous air pollution in one of the country's hardest hit areas have risen 30% as people burn cheaper fuel for warmth. These fine particles—measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter — are especially dangerous because they can lodge deep into the tissue of lungs" according to a study done by University of Carolina.
The air pollution is also considerably greater in areas that are hit the most by the crisis. The main reason for this is that Greek people are recently seeking cheaper energy options which are less environmental-friendly.
Many experts warn that if the air pollution keeps at these high levels, there is a big chance that the general health of Greeks will deteroriate. Hopefully, things will improve so that such level of pollution wouldn't cause some higher risks to the general health. And also environmental awareness is what is more needed nowadays, so that Greeks can refrain using cheaper but more polluting forms of energy.
